Upwords: A 3-D Word Game (Milton Bradley) $12 VGC, $10 GC (Box has heavy wear) Players must form words on an 8x8 (or in the new edition 10x10) grid. The words may be formed horizontally or vertically on the grid, as in Scrabble, but as the title suggests the letters may also be stacked, so that words can be changed by having letters substituted by stacking (up to a limit of 5 high). Scoring is also different to Scrabble; there are no letter values, instead, when a new word is formed the number of tiles used in that word is counted and used as the score. A word that is flat (no stacked tiles) scores double, but the words that score the most are those that have lots of stacking. Great Language Arts extension activity! http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/6080

SCIENCE
BBC DVD "The Amber Time Machine" (David Attenborough) $5 BRAND NEW (Still in wrapper) Attenborough uses a personal artifact--a piece of ancient amber given to him by a young girl at the age of 12--to inspire an in-depth study of amber's unique preservation, in exacting detail, of insects, tree-leaves, and even lizards from the prehistoric past. Attenborough characteristically engages his own curiosity to turn his treasured heirloom into a tiny world of surprising revelations and it's easy to see why he has retained his childlike sense of wonder: His delight in the natural world is quite literally the life force that keeps him going where few have ever been, sharing the wide, wonderful world he sees with the infectious enthusiasm of someone for whom every day brings a new opportunity for exploration or adventure, no matter how modest or grand. 6+
BBC DVD “Time Machine: The World Shaped By Time” Episode 1 $5 BRAND NEW From the creation of the highest mountains to the opening of a flowers petals, time controls the world around us. To understand this super-powerful force on Earth, we must wrench control of time ourselves - compressing, expanding, stopping and dissecting it, to reveal how the passing of time shapes our world and lives. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Time-Machine-Complete-Documentary-Ultimate/dp/B000MZQXYU
BBC DVD “Time Machine: Masters Of Time” Episode 3 $5 BRAND NEW By reducing millennia to milliseconds, Earth's great landmarks - the Grand Canyon, the Sphinx, the Sahara, Mount Everest - are no longer seen as fixed terrains, but ever changing landforms. Rivers slice through solid rock, mountains rise and fall and seas grow into mighty oceans. Life around us has its own rhythms. Golden Globe jellyfish have their own rush hour, moving en masse from the depths to the surface to follow the sun across the sky, whereas cicadas can spend their first 17 years frozen in time underground. Life also operates on longer time scales for its survival. A hummingbird changes it's bill to fit the long trumpet of a flower to feed on it's nectar so it fits like a lock and key. What of man’s relationship with time? In Las Vegas, the 24/7 lifestyle has had an unexpected effect on the natural world; in paddy fields we are cheating time and growing rice faster than nature intended and revolutions in transport mean we can travel further and faster than ever before. But will man ever be able to defy time? Time Machine reveals how scientists are looking to the humble worm for the key to a longer life. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Time-Machine-Complete-Documentary-Ultimate/dp/B000MZQXYU
