Elizabeth Book 1 “Bless This House” (Anne Laurel Carter) Tells the story of the 18th-century expulsion of the Acadians from the perspective of the daughter of one of the New England "Planters" invited to settle the Acadians' land. As this tale begins, Elizabeth is upset about her parents' decision to sell their farm and move to Nova Scotia. Not only is she sad to leave her home, but she keeps dreaming of a fire in a tiny log cabin with a thatched roof. When she realizes that the burning house of her dreams is the original Acadian homestead on her family's new property, and then later, when she meets an Acadian girl, Elizabeth's misgivings about being a Planter deepen. 8+ http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/0141002514/annecarter-20

Ellen Book 1 “Hobo Jungle” (Dorothy Joan Harris) $5 PB EC  It's 1939 and times are tough in Vancouver. Ellen's dad has just lost his job - the Depression has left many people out of work - and so Ellen and her family have to move across town, away from all her friends, to stay with her grandfather. Ellen feels so lonely in her new home, and the neighbourhood around her feels unfamiliar. Luckily, a new friendship relieves her loneliness, if not her sense of deprivation. It is not until Ellen discovers there are people who are much worse off than her that she will learn the true meaning of generosity, and what it means to share when you yourself have little. 8+ http://www.amazon.ca/Ellen-Hobo-Jungle-Canadian-Girl/dp/0141002700
