A Time Quest Book “Westward With Columbus”
(John Dyson) $5 HBDJ EC Fiction alternates with fact in this account of a modern
voyage undertaken to prove that Columbus took a more southerly route than is
generally believed. The non-fiction portion describes the trip made by Spanish
historian, Luis Miguel Coin, who believes that Columbus followed a secret map
through Portuguese-held waters. Excellent full-colour photographs show a crew of
students dressed in 15th-century costume, aboard ship and re-enacting Columbus's
claiming of the New World for Spain. A map shows the historically accepted route
as well as Coin's, and the narrative explains the natural clues he used to
support his claim. The fictional account of Pedro, a young deck hand on the
Santa Maria who returns to Spain on the Nina after that vessel sank,
incorporates many details of shipboard life, portrays the anguish of the Indians
who were forced to accompany Columbus to Spain, and gives a plausible (if
undocumented) explanation of how there could have been a secret map. 9+

Eating The Plates: A
Pilgrim Book Of Food And Manners (Lucille Recht Penner) $7 PB EC
(Minor cover crease) The story of the Pilgrims’ crossing on the Mayflower and
establishment of Plymouth Colony, fleshed out with all the details of their
struggle for survival. Everything that made life difficult in the 1600s is
mentioned--the acceptance of insect infestation in one's hair, clothing, bed,
and food; the lack of efficient implements for home construction; the danger of
crossing the Atlantic on an open vessel; and the deadly aftermath of disease.
The author makes it clear that without the Indians' help, these settlers would
not have made it through their first year, dependent as they were on European
agricultural methods not suited to the New World. While Penner gives a complete
picture of the Pilgrims' daily life, her prime focus is on food--what the people
ate; how they raised, prepared, served, and preserved it. Her writing style has
a light touch that makes this interesting reading, often with a wry slant. The
book concludes with a ``Pilgrim Menu'' for readers to prepare with adult
supervision. The illustrations include pen-and-ink drawings and lithographs that
show period artifacts and various food items. 8-12 YO

Bull’s-Eye: A Photobiography Of Annie Oakley (Sue Macy – National Geographic Society) $6 HBDJ EC (Ex lib) This book is exemplary nonfiction: well documented, lots of period photos with credits, a resource list, and a chronology. Equally important is its engaging and well-crafted account of this famous woman of the West. Some of the facts of Phoebe Ann Moses Butler's life before she became "Annie Oakley" are less well known: her family was Quaker, but extreme poverty led her to use a gun for hunting; she spent two years as a child labourer for an abusive farmer; and she was a strong advocate for women learning to use firearms, offering to train a women's home-front protection division during World War I. Macy has drawn on family members' stories as well as Oakley's unpublished autobiography in this writing. A Picture Book Of Davy
Crockett (David A. Adler) $6 PB BRAND NEW Davy Crockett was born
on August 17, 1786 in a backwoods cabin in eastern Tennessee. At age twelve,
David learned how to shoot a rifle. When he grew up, he won most of the shooting
matches he entered and became a well-known storyteller. No matter where he
lived, he was popular. He was elected to three terms in the House of
Representatives. After being defeated in the congressional election of 1835, he
was ready for new adventure. He rode to Texas, where he fought and died in the
Battle of the Alamo. The watercolours are lively, capturing Crockett's daring
and zestful personality. They use colour, light, and space to depict the many
aspects of his life, from the brawny boasts he reputedly made the day he was
born, to the indigo skies over the Alamo that foreshadow impending doom. 6+

Anasazi (Leonard Everett Fisher)
$5 HB EC (Ex lib) Fisher admirably cobbles together a picture of Anasazi life
from the mere fragments of culture that have weathered the centuries. The
Anasazi civilization grew and flourished in the American Southwest for over a
thousand years. Then, abruptly, about 700 years ago, they left their traditional
haunts and vanished into history. Fisher explains the development of Anasazi
weaving, pottery, and toolmaking, speculates on their shift from
hunter-gatherers to mesa farmers, and details the evolution of their
architecture from pit houses to log-and-pole structures, to complex pueblos (one
had 1,826 rooms), and finally to the glorious sandstone-block cliff houses that
continue to mesmerize visitors today. Relevant terms are introduced, and a
fascinating time chart alerts readers to what was happening elsewhere on the
globe during the years of the Anasazi: Irish monks were toiling on the Book of
Kells, chess was invented in India, Eric the Red sailed to Greenland, Cambridge
University started up in England. Moody sepia illustrations, with highly
contrasted areas of light and shadow, lend an ancient feel and just the right
note of mystery. 7-11 YO

cultures, dating back at least 11,000 years. This is an investigation of three

book is graced with attractive colour photographs, many of them full-page.

AMERICA IN THE 20TH CENTURY
If Your Name Was Changed At Ellis Island
(Ellen Levine) $6 PB EC Did all immigrants come through Ellis Island?
Did you have to have a job waiting for you? It's evident that America has always
been a polyglot magnet--even in 1643, 18 languages were spoken in one colonial
area. Perhaps most interesting here are the individual stories: the name change
in the author's own family; the child who had never seen a banana and ate it
whole; the “six- second'' medical exam. The author gives multiculturalism an
extra boost by ending with a sampling of words and other contributions from many
heritages. Nostalgically warm impressionistic paintings, suffused with sepia,
simultaneously signal suffering and hope. 6-10 YO
