Stories from Famous Music “William Tell” (Illustrated by Hiroshi Mizusawa) $4 HB EC (Ex lib) The story of William Tell, an expert marksman who shot an apple off his son's head with bow and arrow, is a story familiar to boys and girls all over the world. But the background of the story, in the setting of the towering Swiss Alps, is often forgotten. This Fantasia Pictorial presentation captures both the beauty and the excitement of the real event which was an important page in the history of Switzerland's fight for freedom. 10+ http://www.trademe.co.nz/Books/Rare-collectable/Other/1950-today/auction-317527980.htm

William Tell (Margaret Early) $7 HBDJ EC, $6 PB GC Recounts how the legendary Swiss folk hero, forced to shoot an apple from his son's head by the evil governor, catalyzed the Swiss mountaineers' revolt against Austrian tyranny in the early 1300's. This version of a time-honoured legend goes beyond the memorable incident of the shooting of the apple to the continued conflict with Gessler, who seeks to imprison Tell in an island fortress. That this is a story of a fight for freedom and independence is obvious, but it also has a message about self-confidence that is significant. The illustrations, reminiscent of stained glass windows, medieval manuscripts, and even of such works as the Bayeaux Tapestry, are outstanding in both detail and artistic rendering. Borders that vary from page to page and the use of jewel-like colours and gold highlights will fascinate and captivate viewers. Recommended! 7-12 YO http://www.alibris.com/search/books/qwork/7234319/used/William%20Tell

Robin Hood (Margaret Early) $6 HBDJ GC (Minor rippling to bottom edge of pages, a few marks on cover under jacket)  In these 14 adventures of Robin Hood, Early presents a well-rounded telling from Robin's becoming an outlaw, to his friendships with Little John, Friar Tuck, and others; his love for Maid Marian; his capture; escape; King Richard's return; and Robin's death. The language is not as difficult as the traditional Pyle, but the formal tone suits the sense of history. The selections read well and are linked to those preceding and following, but what is astonishing about the book is the attention to detail that turns it into a total aesthetic experience. Each page-long "chapter" is divided into two columns and decorated with an ornate gilded border to relate it to the bordered painting of the action on the opposing page. The full-page paintings are rich in colour and detail and lushly reproduced with gold-leaf trim to resemble a miniature from a medieval book of hours. Highly recommended! http://www.alibris.com/booksearch?qwork=8907402&matches=30&author=Early%2C+Margaret&browse=1&cm_sp=works*listing*title

The One And Only Robin Hood (Nigel Gray) $5 HB EC, $4 PB GC Robin Hood creates chaos in the palace, lures the king and queen and their soldiers into the forest, and is hailed as a hero by the poor. Dressed in green, the ever-fashionable Robin Hood creeps into the king's garden, takes his money, eats the queen's royal bread and honey, lets four and 20 blackbirds loose and runs away with the maid. Gray's retelling of the legend is cast appropriately in the question-and-answer format of medieval ballads sung by troubadours in the English countryside. Craig's Robin is true to the spirit of the prankish and heroic original. This updated version preserves and invigorates the story in rib-tickling pictures that add a colourful insight into this timeless story. 4-8 YO http://www.nigelgray-author.com/Robin-Hood.jpg

Maid Marian And Her Merry Men (Tony Robinson – Worst Jobs In History fame) $2 PB GC The sheriff of Nottingham tricks Robin into competing in the world archery championships of 1195 (first round, first leg) in order to capture him and reestablish law and order in Sherwood Forest. Pagan’s Crusade (Catherine Jinks) $4 PB EC Great series set in the late 1100s revolving around the fortunes of Pagan, an orphan from Bethlehem and his beloved master Lord Roland, a crusader from France. The world of the Crusades, of pilgrims travelling to the Holy Lands and of the often corrupt Church are all brought to life - including all the filth and dreadful sickness and injury of these hard times. Down on his luck and kicked in the pants one too many times, Pagan Kidrouk arrives on the doorstep of the Templar Knights in medieval Jerusalem, looking for work as a squire. Expecting only a respite from life on the street and a few square meals, the sixteen-year-old finds himself hard at work for Lord Roland de Bram — a not-so-exciting life of polishing Lord Roland's armour, laundering his garments, and even training to fight by his side. But as the Infidel Saladin leads his army to Jerusalem, it becomes more and more difficult for Pagan and Lord Roland to decide what action to take or whom to trust. Is a bloody battle for control of the Holy City inevitable? 10+ Highly recommended! http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/j/catherine-jinks/pagans-crusade.htm
