In four thought-provoking chapters, the author discusses with clarity how millions of species are being destroyed, and some of the efforts to halt the damage. He offers intriguing examples of recently discovered, profitable food and medicinal products and of important research and conservation efforts. Problems of poverty in underdeveloped countries, greed in the industrialized world, and the tendency to put large amounts of money and energy into preserving a few popular species rather than whole habitats are covered. The book concludes with suggestions for personal involvement, addresses of organizations, and a list for further reading. Brady's black-and-white pen-and-wash drawings are lovely. 10+ http://www.leurabooks.com.au/shop_image/product/068977.jpg

WAR & PEACE

The Land of Many Colours (Klamath Family Preschool) $2 PB EC Written especially for young children, this story illustrates the negative outcomes of judging people based on unalterable traits.  Each group of people, Purples, Blues, and Greens, segregated themselves from the other groups.  Purples wore purple clothes, ate purple food, and lived with purple people.  Blues and Greens behaved the same way.  The attitude displayed by each group in the beginning of the story resulted in hard feelings toward the others and, ultimately, war.  A child’s voice was finally heard in the din.  The message was simple.  Why are we hurting each other?  Why are we fighting?  We are the same.  No one could tell whether the child was purple, blue, or green.  Covered in the filth of the war, they could only see that he was dusty.  All heard the wisdom of his words and each group realized they were headed for destruction.  As the groups learned to work and live together, peace reigned.  Food was shared.  Houses were rebuilt through cooperation of all people.  The writing style and illustrations make this complex concept understandable to young children. 4-7 YO http://covers.openlibrary.org/b/id/6520926-L.jpg

Rebel! (Allan Baillie) $3 HB VGC The General marches across Burma's dusty plain with tanks, guns, and soldiers. He reaches the school and raises his baton; his tanks flatten the slides, swings, and monkey bars. "You are my people now," he tells the villagers. "I will make the laws." They are too frightened to resist, and how can unarmed farmers and children fight against an army? Then, somewhere inside the school, a rebel responds.... In this powerful story, the courageous action of a young rebel—and its impact gives a powerful insight into life and politics in other countries for young children. Lovely illustrations in this recommended picture book! SHORT LISTED CBCA PICTURE BOOK OF THE YEAR, AMERICAN BOOKSELLER'S PICK OF THE LISTS 5-8 YO http://www.allanbaillie.com.au/rebel.jpg

Peacetimes (Katherine Scholes, illustrated by Robert Ingpen) $4 HB VGC (Ex lib) From an internationally respected author comes this amazing book which brings the message of peace in a fully illustrated age appropriate manner to children. It is practical and helps children to understand that peace is not just something outside of them but involves them directly where they live and play. "Peace is not a gap between times of fighting, or a space where nothing is happening. Peace is something that lives, grows, spreads and needs to be looked after ..... because peace begins with you in your own backyard" 4-7 YO http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/515RD5EHSBL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

The Conquerors (David McKee) $4 HBDJ VGC A lovely picture book that is a modern fable highlighting the futility of war. A General, who rules a large country where the people believe that "their way of life is the best," conquers nearby nations "so they can be like us." Eventually, all the countries in the world are conquered, but one and that one is so small it does not even have an army. And so, of course, when the day comes that the general is unable to resist invading the small country, the outcome is inevitable. Or is it? David McKee's profound story and delightful childlike pictures send a special message that is all the more effective for framing a quiet plea for peace. 5-10 YO  http://images.word-power.co.uk/images/product_images/9781842703304.jpg
