Animalia (Graeme Base) $7 HBDJ EC, $6 PB EC (Inscription) What's this elaborate illustration? "Horrible Hairy Hogs Hurrying Homewards on Heavily Harnessed Horses," of course! Graeme Base's astonishingly creative alphabet book challenges the standard idea of how long reading a book for small kids ought to take. Animalia, like many of Base's books, is a vast puzzle, built with entrancing pictures that unfold into layers and layers of objects--all matched to each page's corresponding letter. Base leaves us stunned and amazed, painting reflections into the oddest surfaces and driving the urge to page-turn. This wonderful picture book works for 2-year-olds, 5-year-olds, and adults alike--something few other alphabet books can manage. Can’t recommend this one highly enough! We used this so much with teaching our young son the letters of the alphabet and their sounds……..and he LOVED it! http://www.amazon.com/Animalia-Graeme-Base/dp/0810918684

POETRY
Poems About Food (Amanda Earl) $3 HB EC (Ex lib) This series of thematic poetry anthologies deals imaginatively with the chosen themes and, on the whole, the poetry slots in well with a child's frame of reference. The joyful subtlety of the poems for young readers is reflected in the imaginative experiments in form, word play, rhythm, rhyme and sound in poems by well-known, less well-known and child poets! The poems, superimposed on beautiful colour photographs or illustrations relevant to the text, capture mood and atmosphere; their novelty and originality should stimulate creative responses from eager, receptive readers and might spark off stimulating class discussions and activities. 6-11 YO http://www.amazon.co.uk/Poems-About-Food/dp/0750210370
Poems About Families (Amanda Earl) $3 HB EC (Ex lib) A further title from the POEMS ABOUT... series, containing 25 poems selected from all over the world, and dealing with the pleasures and problems of family life. 6-11 YO. http://library.barking-dagenham.gov.uk/02_Catalogue/02_005_TitleInformation.aspx?searchTerm=Sensier%2c+Danielle&searchTerm2=&searchTerm3=&searchTerm4=&searchType=0&Page=1&media=&branch=&authority=&language=&junior=&rcn=0750211237&fr=tl
Poems About Weather (Amanda Earl) $3 HB EC (Ex lib) The poems in this colourful collection have been written by some well-known poets such as A.A. Milne, Ogden Nash and Christina Rossetti and by one or two talented young children. There is a great deal of energy discernable in the poems, and the formats are interesting. Some of the poems are quite sensuous (i.e. appealing to the senses of taste, touch and hearing) especially those dealing with snow in winter. The shape poem entitled Shower by Moira Andrew is sure to appeal to children. 6-11 YO http://www.amazon.co.uk/Poems-About-Weather/dp/0750210354
