The Pole-Seekers (Meredith Hooper – author of Watkin Stench) $6 PB VGC The year is 1901 and as men begin their journey to the South Pole, a company of rats on board their ship are about to do the same. This extraordinary children's story tells of the first expedition to the Antarctic from a rat's point of view. A Small Tall Tale From The Far North (Peter Sis) $5 HBDJ VGC Sis draws on boyhood memories for this imaginative yarn about a maybe-real, maybe-fictitious Czech explorer, Jan Welzl. When gold diggers arrive and threaten his newfound friends' peaceful existence, Welzl outwits the intruders. At times recalling Da Vinci's sketches, Sis's handsome pen-and-ink washes are filled with maps, intriguing borders, eclectic details and a pervasive sense of the fantastical that provides just the right balance for the story's nostalgic tone. Vignettes dropped onto antique-like papers suggest the look of an old picture album. 6-11 YO http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/0679843450/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_2?ie=UTF8&index=2

Prince Ivan And The Firebird (Cherry Gilchrist) $6 HBDJ EC (Ex lib) Artwork as vivid and ornate as a Faberge egg, combined with a smooth-as-silk text, keep this from becoming just another retelling of a classic tale. When the youngest son of a king sets out to find the firebird which has been stealing golden apples from his father's tree, he meets a grey wolf who helps him with his quest. Gilchrist draws on 19th-century Russian writer Afanasiev's version for her elegant rendition, maintaining his dark undertones in this story of sibling treachery and mystical adventure. Artist Troshkov accentuates these themes, using a midnight-hued canvas for his distinctly Russian, intensely coloured illustrations. 6-11 YO http://www.cherrygilchrist.co.uk/pages/prince-ivan.html
The Three Wonderful Beggars (Sally Scott) $5 HB VGC adaption of the Russian tale, The Three Wonderful Beggars. After predicting that hard-hearted Mark the Rich will lose his fortune to the young Vassilil, three beggars save Vassilil from Mark’s repeated attempts to kill him. Those who share this title will experience the harsh and crude life of so many Russian peasants, the rich textures in design indicative of Russian art, and the classic Ukrainian lesson of just, though unusual, punishment. 6-10 YO
Stepka And The Magic Fire: A Russian Easter Legend (Dorothy Van Woerkom) $6 HB GC (Minor cover wear) The charcoal-burners' fire brings new life to a poor Russian family on Easter eve. New fire is used to light the Paschal candle on Easter Saturday. It is an important symbol where light from the new fire banishes the darkness of Lent, the same as the coming of Jesus banishes death and sin in believers. Wonderful illustrations. 5-10 YO http://www.amazon.com/Stepka-magic-fire-Russian-Easter/dp/0570034256
The Gossipy Wife (Amanda Hall) $4 PB VGC Ivan is able to turn his wife's gossipy nature to advantage and outwit their greedy landlord. It is no good asking her to keep quiet about his find -- a chest of treasure -- but who is going to believe even Katrina when she insists that she has caught a land pike and a water hare, and that it has been raining pancakes? This lively adaptation of a traditional Russian tale reads aloud well and is aptly illustrated in peasant style pictures which are enhanced by use of grain, pattern and texture as well as close attention to detail: I particularly like the barrel doll endpapers. 5-10 YO
The Firebird (Demi) $6 PB VGC (Ex lib, binding taped, but very sound) A lush, appealing adaptation of the famous Russian folktale. When Dimitri finds a feather from the fabled Firebird, evil Tsar Ivan orders him to capture the bird. He is also commanded to fetch the beautiful fairy princess Vassilissa, to retrieve her wedding dress from a golden cask at the bottom of the sea, and eventually to jump into a vat of boiling water. In the end, Tsar Ivan gets what he deserves and Dimitri wins Vassilissa's hand in marriage. Echoes of the fine craft of Cloisonne and the intricacies of Faberge are evident in the magnificent gilded illustrations. 6-10 YO. http://www.amazon.com/Firebird-Demi/dp/0805078118

Great fun. 5-9 YO
Zlateh The Goat And Other Stories (Isaac Bashevis Singer, illustrator Maurice Sendak) $6 HBDJ EC (Ex lib) With wit and whimsy, Maurice Sendak illustrates seven tales about the legendary village of fools, Chelm, written by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Silly, outrageous, and sometimes poignant, the stories (translated from the Yiddish) reflect the traditions, heroes, and villains of middle European folklore. Retellings of seven traditional Jewish tales including "The Snow in Chelm," "The Mixed-Up Feet and the Silly Bridegroom," and "The Devil's Trick." Selected by the New York Times Book Review as one of the Best Illustrated Children's Books of 1966. Somehow, though, possibly because ignorance is bliss, fools always come out on top in these wonderful stories, making for terrific read-aloud, laugh-aloud fun for the entire family. 6-12 YO NEWBERY HONOR MEDAL http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/s/isaac-bashevis-singer/zlateh-goat.htm

When the rabbi rises from his bed and dons peasant's garb, the Litvak follows him through town in the shadows cast by houses to the forest beyond.
