PICTURE BOOKS

Jungle Doctor Picture Fables Collection (Paul White) $6 HB EC A collection of eight of the well-loved animal fables from the Jungle Doctor series of books that made Paul White famous throughout the world. An Australian, Dr White served with the Church Missionary Society in Tanganyika from 1938-41 before entering medical practice. The lessons portrayed using simple jungle animals, especially the monkeys, are easy to grasp and retain by young children. The characters experience every day problems...in a jungle sort of way...with hilarious outcomes and practical applications. Wonderful illustrations that children love! 5-10 YO http://www.christianbookstore.co.uk/item/jungle-doctor/jungle-doctor-fables-collection/60829.html

The Crippled Lamb (Max Lucado) $3 HB EC Joshua, the black and white spotted lamb, longed to be like the other lambs. He wondered why he had to limp along with a crippled leg, instead of running and playing in the meadow. Because Joshua the lamb was different, he often felt left out. Yet God had a very special plan for his life, as He does for all who feel alone. Joshua not only witnessed the greatest event in history, he was able to give the newborn King the one thing He needed most. 4-9 YO http://www.amazon.com/Crippled-Lamb-Max-Lucado/dp/0849910056#reader_0849910056

I Wonder…Did Jesus Have A Pet Lamb? (Janette Oke) $5 HB EC We know a lot about the baby Jesus and Jesus as a man. But what about Jesus as a boy? What was he like? I Wonder takes a creative look at what the life of the boy Jesus might have been like. Perhaps he had a pet lamb, liked to build with blocks, or went fishing with his grandpa. The book is imaginatively illustrated and contrasts contemporary children and toys. Accurate depictions of the Holy Land 2,000 years ago provide the backdrop for captivating scenes of childlike pursuits. Ideal for families and Sunday school teachers. 5-9 YO http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/076422901X/ref=dp_image_text_0?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books

Dangerous Journey: The Story Of Pilgrim’s Progress (Oliver Hunkin) $5 HB VGC A beautifully produced, large-format version of Bunyan's classic. Although all aspects of the book are skilfully handled, the illustrations are the real key to its effectiveness. Intricately detailed and constructed in a fluid, energetic, well-balanced style, they sweep across the pages dramatically. Some are small, but most are full- or double-page spreads with the text in a large, elegant typeface arranged in a variety of patterns around them. The good people are handsome, suitably heroic, but the villains are sharply and wittily portrayed. The costume and setting of 17th-century England are faithfully detailed. Rhythmic and stately, the prose is appropriate to the original without being obscure, and it reads aloud well. Highly recommended! 6-12 YO http://www.amazon.com/Dangerous-Journey-Story-Pilgrims-Progress/dp/0802836194#reader

The Family Pilgrim’s Progress (Retold by Jean Watson) $4 HB EC This is a modern day translation of Bunyan's Classic, The Pilgrim's Progress, and extra features throughout the book explain the Biblical meanings of the various character names and the places they visit as well as Bunyan's thinking as he wrote about them. Great pictures! Recommended! 4-9 YO  http://www.gregoryandcompany.co.uk/pages/authors/titles.asp?AuthorID=32&TitleID=702

Amahl And The Night Visitors (Gian Carlo Menotti) $3 HB EC The honored composer tells the story of his most famous opera, inspired by his own miraculous recovery from lameness as a child. A poor, crippled boy Amahl and his mother are dazzled by the three kings on the way to Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. Amahl's mother welcomes the royal sojourners who rest in the small, bare house where love and faith work miracles during the night. Wonders appear to mesmerize the reader on every page, glorified by Lemieux's paintings. In colour, in feeling, the illustrations are so right that one all but sees and hears the opera in performance. Menotti's wit and reverence are reflected in the artist's visions, creating a classic Christmas book. A lovely picture book….recommended! 5-10 YO http://www.amazon.com/Amahl-Night-Visitors-Carlo-Menotti/dp/0688054269#reader

I Say A Little Prayer For You (Karin Littlewood) $3 PB GC (Has a small bend in cover) The 1967 song has been transformed into an exuberant picture book in which a beaming mother cherishes her young daughter. Sweeping, swirling, softly realistic watercolours in glowing shades are effectively arranged on double pages, full pages, and a variety of smaller shapes and sizes. They show the little girl awakening on her birthday, choosing a bright red dress to wear, walking to school with her mother, having a party in the park with her friends, and being tucked into bed at the end of a beautiful day. Although not written specifically for a parent-child relationship, the lyrics adapt well as an expression of maternal feeling, stressing that the child will be loved forever. Suitable for reading aloud, the words are simple and rhythmic. The praying (nondenominational) and loving aspects are repeated for emphasis, while the sunny, joyful mood of the illustrations expands their meaning. 3-7 YO http://www.amazon.com/I-Say-Little-Prayer-You/dp/0439296587#reader
