This book depicts conditions in which poor people lived in England in the 18th century and can give students some idea of how life might have been in England when the First Fleet set sail for Australia. 6-11 Recommended!

Hodder Everyday Life In Australia “First Settlement Days” (John Goode) $3 PB VGC Attractively and colourfully illustrated, this book explains how Governor Phillip, the soldiers and their families, and the convicts adjusted to their new land. They had to clear the bush, build houses and plant crops and at the same time, adjust to a harsh climate. This book is about their experiences. 8-12 YO

Many original source items like engravings, posters etc and full of maps, tables and charts. A great introductory book on the subject of transportation and free settlement. 8+

The Ship That Never Was – The Last Great Escape From Sarah Island, Macquarie Harbour – Liberty Or Death! (Richard Davey) $2 PB VGC  A comic strip format of the last escape from Macquarie Harbour penal settlement, Tasmania, by James Porter and three other men in 1833. The settlement was being abandoned due to too many escapes being made by convicts. Tells the story of the convict capture of the ship “Frederick” and their subsequent capture and sentencing  9+

Rum Rebellion: A study Of The Overthrow Of Governor Bligh By John Macarthur And The New South Wales Corps   (H.V. Evatt) $3 PB VGC The 26th of January is a significant date in Australian history - on this day in 1788 the Colony of New South Wales was founded, and on the 20th Anniversary of the young Colony in 1808, the duly appointed Governor was overthrown and replaced with a military rule in what is now known as the Rum Rebellion. The key players in this drama were the Governor (William Bligh) , John Macarthur and the Officers of the New South Wales Corp.
