Bound for Botany Bay: The First Fleet & the Convict Years (Geoff Hocking) $4 HB VGC (Ex lib) Many of the first convicted transportees escaped from custody; some died in the bush, some gave themselves up, while others marauded the outlying farms until they were hunted down, shot, or brought back to face the heavy-handed justice of the British Crown. These convicts became Australia's first bushrangers. The First Fleet (Alan Boardman & Roland Harvey) $5 HB GC, $4 PB GC A children’s picture book with wonderful cartoons telling the story of John Hudson, the youngest convict on the First Fleet. Australia's Immigrants "Convicts and Early Settlers: 1788-1850” (Kieran Hosty) $4 HB VGC (Ex lib) One of a series of five children's books outlining immigration to Australia from 1788 through to 2000. Looks at who and why the convicts and early settlers came to Australia, the difficulties of the voyage and what everyday life in the new land was like for them. The books examine the various push and pull factors along with political events and legislative changes that encouraged both willing and unwilling immigrants to Australia. Australian Knowledge “The Convict Era” (Matthew Williams) $3 PB VGC (Ex lib) Takes us from the departure of the First Fleet in 1787 through to the arrival of the final convict ship in Western Australia in 1868. The convicts were a mixture of some of the worst offenders seen in the courts of Britain and some whose only crime was trying to feed their families. Convicts and Other British Colonisers (Mike Wheeler) $2 PB VGC (Ex lib) In the late eighteenth century, Britain was looking for a new place to send convicts. Australia seemed like the perfect place. Pack of Thieves? 52 Port Arthur Lives (Hamish Maxwell-Stewart) $6 PB VGC The stories of 52 of Port Arthur’s convicts who served time there in the 1830s. It looks at the impact of transportation upon their lives and charts the ways in which they negotiated a passage through Arthur’s penal colony. Bound For Botany Bay: Impressions of Transportation and Convict Life (J.D. Shearer – 1st edition collector’s item) $5 HBDJ EC  A fantastic and unique description of Australia's convict period. Prize-winning artist J.D. Shearer's gallery of impressions, meticulously researched, makes a telling comment on these times. The paintings are accompanied by excerpts from writings of the period. Whether a passage from a ponderous House of Lords report, or the lonely wail of a banished convict maid echoed in a street ballad of the times, the effect is a startling glimpse of life in colonial Sydney Town. Australian Golden Project Book “The Convict Era” (Kevin & Anne Broadribb) $3 PB EC (Unused) Both a colouring and large colour stamp book which also outlines the reasons for convicts being sent to Australia, hulks, Captain Arthur Phillip, the First Fleet, life aboard ship, Botany Bay and the first settlement, convict work and punishment such as chain gangs and cat-o-nine-tails, Port Arthur, Castle Hill Rebellion, and convicts who made good such as Francis Greenway and Mary Reibey. Very useful resource for reinforcing class studies. 8-11 YO

Australia’s Convicts “Life in a New Land” (Wendy Macdonald) $4 HB VGC (Ex school) The part played by the convicts in the establishment of the new settlements and penal stations is the main focus here. Interesting additions are facsimiles of government notices eg. re arrival of female prisoners as potential servants, ticket-of-leave men as police recruits. There is also a graphic map of the disposition of the settlement at Sydney Cove. Hodder Everyday Life In Australia “First Settlement Days” (John Goode) $2 PB VGC Attractively and colourfully illustrated, this book explains how Governor Phillip, the soldiers and their families, and the convicts adjusted to their new land. They had to clear the bush, build houses and plant crops and at the same time, adjust to a harsh climate. The Life of Bennelong: Living in Two Cultures (Barrie Sheppard) $4 HB EC (Ex lib) Bennelong was a warrior of the Wanghal tribe of Aboriginal people who lived in the area around where Sydney stands today. When Govenor Phillip sailed the First Fleet into Sydney Harbour in 1788. Bennelong's life was set to change forever. Bennelong learnt about the British ways, and, through him, Phillip learnt something of the Aboriginal ways. Details many escapes from the early convicts such as William Buckley who escaped into the bush to live with the Aboriginals for 32 years; ticket-of-leave man, John Mitchel,  surrenders parole and is hunted again; the seizure of the Cyprus bound for ‘Hell’s Gates’ by convicts desperate to escape and many more.
