Through Watkin's narrative, the reader also learns a great deal about rat behaviour, but Hooper includes much more than history and biology lessons in her story; in addition to presenting a humorous take on the sometimes strange behaviour of humans, she also tells a compelling story that finds her rodent hero facing a number of struggles in his new country, working to gain respect among his fellow rats, and finally deciding to become a permanent resident of Australia. "Based on fact it read like the best fiction, this clever book certainly deserves to be included among the best of books on early Australian history. 9+ http://www.amazon.com/Journal-Watkin-Stench-Meredith-Hooper/dp/0330324942

James has a genius for getting into mischief and finding adventure, whether it be a bout of fisticuffs with the Bully Boys of the Rocks district, an encounter with an escaped convict, or the discovery of stolen rum. She paints a sympathetic portrait of Mary Reibey, the children's mother—a portrait founded on fact, for Mary Reibey was actually transported to Sydney as a young girl—her "crime" that of snatching a joyride on a neighbour's horse.  10+ Recommended! http://www.collectablebooks.com.au/australiana/house-by-the-water-by-nance-donkin.html

Mutiny’s Daughter (Ann Rinaldi) $5 HBDJ EC (Ex lib) Once again, Rinaldi has unearthed a historical nugget and polished it into a gem of a story. This intriguing novel is based on the premise of what could have happened if the notorious Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian returned to England with his five-year-old daughter, who was born on Pitcairn Island, and left her on the Isle of Man to be raised by his mother, before he went into hiding. The characters are well drawn and believable and the 19th-century English setting is vividly presented. This clever, well-written historical novel may just inspire curious readers to investigate the personalities and events on which the story is based. 11+ http://www.amazon.com/Mutinys-Daughter-Ann-Rinaldi/dp/0060296380#reader_0060296380

Sea of Mutiny (Ken Catran) $6 PB GC (Cover creases) Historical teen fiction that focuses on the character of 16-year-old John Hallet, who sailed on the ill-fated Bounty when Christian and others staged the mutiny against Captain Bligh. Cast adrift in a small boat in wild and dangerous seas, Hallet tells the remarkable story of how Bligh led these sailors to safety. This story is interspersed with a fictionalised account of the events that led up to the mutiny on the Bounty. Historically accurate and well-researched, this is a revisionist look at Bligh who has gone down in history as sadistic and cruel. Instead, this book portrays Bligh as a victim of the British class system and his own flawed decision making. At the same time as being a fascinating historical read, this is an exciting plot-driven novel about massive sea voyages in treacherous conditions upon overcrowded, overladen ships. 2006 STORYLINES NOTABLE YOUNG ADULT FICTION BOOK. 11+ http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/c/ken-catran/sea-of-mutiny.htm
