Australian Bushrangers (Bill Scott) $6 PB EC (Ex lib) An authoritative source book on Australian bushrangers. Australians have always had a soft spot for the daring bushrangers of last century with their contempt for organised Authority. In fact, Ned Kelly is still considered almost a hero by some of us! In this book Bill Scott looks at the most notorious of Australia's bushrangers - men who were fugitives from the Law, who robbed, stole stock and sometimes killed. From this lawless period of our past when most men went armed, the names of Frank Gardiner, bold Ben Hall, Captain Thunderbolt, Captain Moonlight and Ned Kelly are well remembered. Less well known but equally daring and desperate were William Westwood ("Jacky-Jacky"), the Wild Scotsman, "Old Harry" Power, "Mad Dan" Morgan, and the Clarke Gang. Bill Scott gives an insight into the lives, times and exploits of these men and of those who hunted them. He also recounts tales of the Battle for Bathurst, and the Burragorang Valley ("Terrible Hollow"). Bill's lively and interesting text is accompanied by a selection of illustrations and photographs from the period. Some popular poems, which express the sentiment of "bushranger as hero" in many cases, are also included. 10+ http://www.bookworm.com.au/shop/scditem.asp?ProdID=14622
Bushrangers –
A Pictorial History
(Harry Nunn) $8 PB EC
A great reference book where the entire history of Australian bushranging, from
the first convict bolters to the later native-born heroes, is told. He tells of
the Wild Colonial Boys and the gold rush robbers of the 1850s who staged armed
highway robberies in their quest for adventure and riches. Following hard on the
heels of the gold rush robbers came the bold, fearless and free style of
bushranger of the 1860s. Their independence was romanticised by the growing
urban population. Some had the reputation of gentlemen and were even regarded as
chivalrous. Harry Nunn has a deep appreciation of the social reasons for the
bushranging phenomenon, and often describes police bravery as well as the daring
exploits of the bushrangers themselves. He perceptively recognises that dominant
individuals often wanted to break free of the new respectable society that was
emerging. He also implies that individuals with initiative, in either legal or
illegal ways, nevertheless made their mark in those early days of Australian
history, when life was precarious and a new country was only just putting down
its first roots.
Illustrated by over 200 photographs and engravings, this is a fascinating
account of a group of men who were destined to become part of an Australian
legend. 10+

Australian Library “Bushrangers” (Stephen Gard) $3 HB EC (Ex lib) The bushranger is a colourful character in Australia's history - but what is the truth? We admire some of the bushranger's qualities - his courage, independence, humour and swagger - but we hate his greed, his cruelty and his violence. This book looks at the life and times of some of Australia's most notorious bushrangers. It also seeks to put their deeds into context by providing a glimpse of early Australian society. 7-10 YO http://www.bookworm.com.au/shop/scditem.asp?ProdID=13304

Bail Up! By 1830, the NSW settlement had spread north along the Hunter Valley and west to the Blue Mountains. The new farms were very isolated and easily plundered and most bushrangers were escaped convicts who were able to live in the bush because they often had help from convict servants working on the properties. Looks at Musquito, the Aboriginal bushranger; John Donahoe, ‘Bold Jack’; Edward Davis, Teddy the Jewboy; and Martin Cash, Cash and Company.
Felons On The Run Once the Felons Apprehension Act was introduced in 1865, stating that a wanted could be declared an outlaw and anyone could shoot him without bringing him to trial, the bushrangers became more determined not to be caught and often caused them to fire first to avoid being capturted. Ned Kelly – The Last Stand (Ian Jones) $7 PB EC (RRP $20.00) Carrington's first hand account of his experience at the Glenrowan siege is very interesting and a worthwhile read. He was able to witness most aspects of the siege, from the train journey from Melbourne with police, to just after the Inn was burned. The most interesting incidents in the siege are reported, including a description of Ned emerging through the dawn mist to make his famous last stand, "…It was the most extraordinary sight I ever saw or read of in my life, and I felt fairly spell-bound with wonder, and I could not stir or speak." Carrington witnessed Ned's capture and interviewed him afterward, providing a wonderfully detailed description of him, "…jet black hair, inclined to curl; reddish beard and moustache…altogether a fine figure of a man, the only bad part about his face being his mouth, which is a cruel and wicked one." Thomas Carrington's vivid engravings of the Glenrowan siege are a delight of this book. 10+ http://www.bailup.com/booksCarrington.htm
