Milestones In Australian History “Federation” (John & Jennifer Barwick) $3 HB EC (Ex lib) From a brief history of federation in other parts of the world, this book traces the Australian experience beginning with Parkes' Tenterfield address in favour of federation. The book highlights the three main issues which could be solved by federation: defence, tariffs and immigration. Arguments for and against are given, as well as the social, economic and political factors leading up to the event and the self interest of the premier of NSW which caused the first referendum in 1898 to fail. Simply but colourfully illustrated with tinted historical etchings and drawings, coloured borders and parchment-style extracts from primary sources. This book also tells about important people of the Federation movement, the decade of conferences and conventions that preceded Federation and the search for an Australian capital city. Australia Past To Present “Building The Nation: From Colonies To Federation” (Itiel Bereson) $3 HB EC (Ex lib) This book covers the growth of Australia from a collection of settlements to a federated group of colonies or states. It acknowledges the existence of the Aboriginal nation and the British lack of acknowledgement of the rights of Aborigines to consideration. Reasons for federation are given as well as the steps taken by various people to achieve independence of a sort. Brief biographies of eight significant men are included and a timeline to 1913, the date of the naming of Canberra. A glossary explains terms used in the particular context of the book and a timeline briefly outlines the significant events of the period. Setting out is uncluttered and easy to use, has great illustrations and an index. 10+

Prime Ministers Of Australia (Jill Bruce) $3 PB EC Each of Australia’s 25 Prime Ministers is given a page or two detailing their life both before and during their term as our nation’s leader. It is an informative read and gives readers an overview of each leader. Nicely illustrated and appealing for younger students. 8-12 YO

Australia’s Immigrants “Post-War Europeans: 1940-1975” (Helen Trepa) $4 HB EC (Ex lib) A really interesting book with lots of original source documents and photos. Explains the reasons for Australia opening its doors to foreign immigrants, where they came from and in what numbers. Includes personal migration stories and a timeline. Has a guide to researching your family history. Recommended! 8-12 YO
