Covered briefly are the Maori Wars, the Sudan, and the Boxer Rebellion. The major part of the book deals with the Boer War in South Africa – the longest and most difficult of the Colonial Wars that Australia was involved in. Great illustrations and easy text. 8-11 YO
Hodder Australia “Everday Life In Australia: The Depression Years” (Nance Irvine) $3 PB EC From 1929 until the late 1930s Australia was in the grips of the Great Depression. This book vividly describes both the grim poverty of those years and the happy side of life, and the colourful illustrations capture the feeling of the times. Simple text. 8-11 YO

Simpson And Duffy (Mary Small) $3 PB EC (Ex lib) John Simpson Kirkpatrick was born in England but came to work and travel in Australia. After the outbreak of WW1 he joined the army with the 3rd Field Ambulance along with the thousands of volunteers believing he would get a free passage home to see his mother and sister. Instead, at dawn on April 25th 1915 he landed on Gallipoli and became part of the ANZAC legend. “I was determined that Simpson's gallant yet gentle story should be retold for children. Australians At War “World War I” (Robert Hillman) $4 HB EC (Ex lib) More than 330 000 volunteers enlisted in the armed forces to support Britain; nearly 60 000 of those men were killed. Looks at the ANZACS and some of the famous battles they fought in the Middle East and Europe, including the Western Front with special emphasis being given to Gallipoli. Looks at what life was like as a soldier on the battlefield, as well as for the people at home in Australia. Great photos and maps and includes an index, glossary and timeline. 9-13 YO
Escape To Death: The Japanese Break-Out At Cowra, 1944 (Hugh Clarke) $4 PB GC On 5 August, 1944, there was a mass break-out of Japanese prisoners-of-war, from a compound in the small town of Cowra in country New South Wales. This early morning escape resulted in the murder of four Australians and the death of 231 prisoners. For security reasons very little was revealed at the time, and this book, originally published as 'Break-Out' in 1965, was the first and only full account.
