Growing Up in the 60s (Tom Thompson) $3 HB VGC (Ex lib) Tom Thompson grew up in the sixties in New South Wales. His family moved from Wagga Wagga to Sydney, Broken Hill and Wollongong. His experiences of major events (the Vietnam war protests, the first man on the moon, the change to decimal currency) and day-to-day life are related with humour. The Depression Through Children’s Eyes (Anna Ciddor) $5 HB EC (Ex lib) A wonderful book, told as a story with lovely picture book type illustrations. Set in 1932, it tells the story of Lorna and her family after her father is told his wages have been reduced for a while to help his employer get through the Depression. Looks at mealtimes, Salvation Army soup kitchens, clothes, school etc during this difficult time. Also looks at the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, vehicles of the era, playtime and outings to the beach. A lovely book! 8-12 YO

Hodder Australia “Everyday Life In Australia: The Depression Years” (Nance Irvine) $3 PB EC From 1929 until the late 1930s Australia was in the grips of the Great Depression. This book vividly describes both the grim poverty of those years and the happy side of life, and the colourful illustrations capture the feeling of the times. Simple text. 8-11 YO

Swagmen And Sundowners (Edel Wignell) $3 PB VGC In Australia during times of great need, men walked the countryside looking for work. They carried a pack, or swag, on their backs, and were called 'swagmen', or 'swaggies' for short.
