To the parent/carer from Steve Parish: "To publish children's books about Australian nature has been a dream of mine for many years. I love Australia and I love books. Sharing that love with children is one of my passions. I believe that a newborn's first gifts should include books as well as toys. Every child should reach school age knowing all about the joys and adventures to be found in books. The best way to give a child that joy is to explore books with them. There are no special skills needed - just sit together, read aloud and talk about the pictures. We have planned these Story Books so kids and carers can enjoy them together. It is our hope that the stories will inspire in children an interest in Australian wildlife. If you're within reach of a zoo or fauna park, perhaps a visit would be fun. So why not sit down and share the joy of reading with the children you care for? It could be the greatest gift you can give them." - Steve Parish.

The Wombat
Who Talked To The Stars: The Journal Of A Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat
(Jill Morris) $6 HB EC (Ex lib) A very special book about
a rare and endangered species found in one small area in Australia. The species
called the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is teetering on the brink of extinction,
having decreased to about 60 individuals living in burrows in the hot, dry
north-west of Queensland. Jill Morris’ imaginative text and Sharon Dye’s
watercolour illustrations range from (true) narrative stories to poems and
scientific reports. The layout is reminiscent of an ancient document, designed
and written by one of the wombats, who has walked into the study traps 58 times!
This satisfying book with the texture of an archival treasure records the
special moment when a young male ‘flew’ away to start a captive breeding
program. 5-12 YO

The Death Of A Wombat (Ivan Smith, with paintings, etchings and line drawings by Clifton Pugh) $6 PB EC A story told in poetry as a humble wombat meets a tragic end during a bushfire.
